If you’re like most people, you have an interest in art and visit a museum while on vacation. You are also curious to learn a little bit more about how the art world truly works. This seminar, called Introduction to Art Collecting, is your insider key to the art world answering the following questions.


Art Market

What are the trends in the art world today? What are the world’s top art markets? What art the top art cities in Germany? Is that really art? Why are some artists famous while others with more talent are unknown? What terminology? What’s a print, lithograph, edition? 


Art Collector

Am I an art collector or art buyer? How do German art collectors compare to other countries? What is the German art collector like? How do most people begin their collection? What do art collectors have in common?


Planning a Collection

How do I begin a collection? How do art collections generally evolve over time? Does my taste change as I collect more art? What type of art should I hang in each room? How do I transport art? How do I hang and light my artwork? Do I need to insure my artwork? What if I find a piece in another country, how does it get shipped here?


Galleries

How do galleries decide which artists to show? Is there really a different between galleries? How do I approach a gallery? What are the best questions to ask a gallerist? What’s a waiting list? What is the relationship between a gallery and its artists? Can an artist switch galleries? Why do artists have galleries? What percentage of the sale of a piece of art goes to the art gallery?

Where do I find art that I can afford? How has the Internet affected the art world? Can I buy art online? What is the difference between different art fairs? How do auctions work? How do I find student art?


The Work Itself

What do I look for in a piece of art, how do I see if it’s quality? What questions do I ask about a particular piece? Why does some art have a title and some not? If the art is sold in a series, is number 1 better than number 6 and is there a cost difference? Will this particular artwork raise in value? How do I sell a piece of art when I bore with it? What questions should I ask about a particular piece of work?


Value of Art

Who decides the value of art? How do I determine if the price is fair? I’m in a third world country, why are the art galleries charging international rates?  Can I treat art as an investment portfolio? Who can I negotiate with? Does art raise in value?
