Kathrin Hausel

Kathrin Hausel (born 1979 in Fürth) lives and works in Bonn. Her 2003 degree show, entitled Who the fuck is Alice?, received critical acclaim nominated for two awards – the Kunstpreis der Nürnberger Nachrichten and the Kunstpreis der Stadt Bonn.  Preferring to work in large format, Hausel procured 250 x 200 cm Persian carpets as her platform, where a young girl is portrayed missing her right arm and a boy missing his right leg. By playing with contrasts, she was challenging the viewer’s set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitute their way of viewing reality.

Hausel continued to experiment with new materials over the next few years, returning to the traditional canvas in 2006 to focus on her renewed interest of people and individuals, particularly those she finds interesting, slightly different and charismatic.

a sense of contemplative calm, particularly AC/DC, 2008 featuring a young woman looking wistfully into space as if remembering her feelings and emotions upon hearing the song for the first time. Rarely are urbanites confronted with the reality of nature, therefore Hausel depicts a false version of nature with a graffiti-tainted wood background, bird wallpaper, abstract tree or wooden chair. Her subjects surround themselves with this falsity in order to feel more connected. Wood as a stylish element is seen through much of Hausel’s recent work. Her palette is peaceful and unusual as if viewing the world through a romantic, soft and gauzy lens. Her final touches include small but powerful graphic design details such as an AC/DC button or her favored starburst icon.

Kathrin Hausel, along with hot young German talents Martin Galle and Max Frintrop, took part in E105’s 2008 group exhibition entitled “Leichte Mädchen Schwere Jungs” celebrating the gritty, rough up-and-coming neighborhood surrounding the gallery.  With Walter, 2008, she chose a hard-looking dude covered in tattoos, with shaved head, piercings and aggressive jewelry - someone you might cross the street in order to avoid. Unwilling to portray him in an obviously clichéd, aggressive stance, she poses him sleeping naked in the fetal position - exposing his sweetness and vulnerability.

The Urban Legends series, 2007-2008, combines portraiture and graphic design elements to depict urban dwellers listening to music. A direct translation of the concept is visible in One night to speed up truth, 2008, where the subject is wearing headphones. The other pieces in the series convey
