Julia Heatherwick is part of an exhibition, Melt my Art: Encaustic Expressions, at Bakersfield Museum of Art which runs until August 28, 2008. Eight contemporary artists are featured: Julia Heatherwick, Mary Black, Matt Duffin, Eric Hesse, Judith Kindler, Thea Schrack, Carolyn Springer, and Tina Vietmeier. Subject matter varies from abstract, portrait, still life, mixed media.

Julia Heatherwick recently went mixed media, combining her traditional encaustic work with wood and found objects. Above is one of her new works, Growing Wings (2008), that look sculptural and more formal. I like the way the elements bring out both femininity and masculinity.

Do you know what’s missing from the Köln art scene? Druckgrafik. This medium is fascinating. Artists who are attracted to the medium vary in personality -- compared to other types of artists. All German art schools have Druckgrafik Werkstatt’s...so why aren’t we seeing more Druckgrafik exhibitions? Schade. I’m currently in Berlin visiting various Werkstatt’s and Druckgrafik experts in order to see the process in action and hunt for talent. The exhibition will be called Dirty Fingers. Hopefully this week I’ll find a room in Köln to host the exhibition around August or so. It would be great if there were an old, abandoned Druckgrafik Werkstatt or Fabrik.

The concept for the exhibition is slowly coming together. I would like to show various techniques in order to explain how each process functions. The challenge is determine which artists to exhibit because there are so many amazing, talented artists working in this medium in Germany. Do I show some of my Seattle artists, too? Do I exhibit two artists per technique or one? Since all of you have different taste in subject matter, the exhibition will consist of abstract, figurative, landscape, minimalist, maybe a few others.

Artathlos Beijing 2008. Twenty Italian contemporary artists interpret Olympic disciplines of the XXIX Beijing Olympic Games with Piero Addis serving as art director. Allegra Betti Van Der Noot’s theme is cycling. The group exhibition will take place at the Haidian Exhibition Center located 5 km from Bird Nest (Olympic Stadium) and 8 km from the Olympic Village. “Casa Italia” will be open for four weeks from July 26 through August 24.

Sara Hairston-Medice will show along with Resa Blatman and Mary O’Malley at Laconian Gallery, Boston. The exhibition, called Overflow, with a loose theme of overabundant beauty/decoration takes place in October/November 2008. Hairston-Medice’s new work is more sculptural. She is making knit "vessels" and large hanging installation pieces, along with "yarn paintings". She is also working on a piece that will cover the corner of the room, like something growing out of the walls and spreading.
