Reason_for_lack_of_Druckgrafik

It’s a very small world. Eva Maria Juras and I went to a Japanese Tea Ceremony in Bergisch Gladbach yesterday. During the 2-hour ceremony, we not only learned about Japanese tea houses, traditions and sweets but also the reason there is less Druckgrafik work in Germany. The owner of the tea house is an artist, Martin Knipphals, with a long career in engraving (Radierung). Apparently from about 1975 - 1981 there were Druckgrafik works released by famous artists like Picasso. The monotone (one color) work was issued in 10,000 edition for a cost of 20 DM (Deutsche Mark). Collectors and art buyers alike purchased the artwork. But the following year, the same exact image was reproduced using a different color. Again 10,000 edition for a cost of 20 DM. This angered the public and drastically affected the Druckgrafik art scene. The market crashed and the incident angered Druckgrafik artists, who decided to switch to other medium, such as painting. So I’d like to clarify the fact that the work exhibited for Dirty Fingers will be available in limited edition (usually 25 or under) and will not be reproduced at a later time using the same plates, different colors. All artwork will be original Druckgrafik (not lithographs of existing paintings) by artists whose primary medium is Druckgrafik.
